Is your dog overweight? 要减肥?

Obese dogs are not an exclusive issue to the States.  I see more and more dogs being overweight in Hong Kong everyday.  Yes, it might be cute but overweight can lead to a lot of health problems such as those listed in Health Issues from being overweight 過重會有好多健康問題.

Canine: Constipation / 便秘

 

我相有發生過在你身上, 而你知道便秘有多痛苦。當它發生在你的狗身上，我們更痛苦因為狗不能跟我們說出問題。在一般情況下，飲食有影響，健康動犬隻每一天要便便一次或兩次。而有時一至兩天無大便是可以接受的，佢當它是兩（2）天以上，我地就要做D野.

I am sure it has happen to you and you know how painful it is.  When it happen to your pet, it becomes even more painful as your dog cannot speak.  In general, depending on their diet, healthy dogs have one or two stools a day.  One or two days without stools is not a cause of concern; however, when it is more than two (2) days, something has to be done

原因
- 狗沒有得到足夠的運動, 移動能幫助排便
- 喝不足夠水. 水是在消化過程中必需的, 不足夠水可能會導致"硬"便
- 飲食沒有足夠的纖維
- 餵得太多骨，太多骨也可以引起便秘
- 吃了異物: 玩具, 石頭 ...
- 藥物的副作用
- 緊張
- 肛門囊阻塞或膿腫

Cause
- Dogs not getting enough exercise which help with bowel movement
- Dogs not drinking sufficient amount of water which is required during digestion might result with "harden" fences
- Not enough fiber in the diet
- Giving your dog too much bone can also cause constipation
- Eaten foreign objects
- Side effects from medications
- Exposures to stressful situation
- Blocked or abscessed anal sacs 

自家治療（假設你的狗是沒有診斷到有其他疾病，否則請先跟您的獸醫談談）
- 南瓜具有較高的水含量和高纖維。你可以餵罐頭南瓜（但要確保它沒有加糖或其他物質）或將新鮮南瓜用攪拌機原漿。 
- 生薑可以幫助放鬆肌肉及治療便秘. 也可減少腸道炎症助排便。  
- 混1茶匙橄欖油, 礦物油, 或魚肝油到狗的食物 
- 給你的狗的濕的食品（如果你餵乾糧食品，給你的狗罐頭食品） 
- 水：確保你的狗有足夠的水可用。如果他不喜歡喝水，混雞湯鼓勵他喝多些。 
- 帶你的狗散步, 讓他/她有很多機會便便
- 如果仍然沒有大便，去見獸醫!

Home Treatment (assuming your dog is not diagnosis with other diseases; otherwise talk to your vet first)
- Pumpkin has high water content and high in fiber.  You can feed can pumpkin (make sure it has no sugar or addictive) or puree fresh pumpkin for your dog.
- Ginger can help treat constipation by relaxing the muscles and reduce inflammation in the bowel.
- Mix 1 teaspoon of olive oil, mineral oil or cod liver oil into the dog food
- Give your dog wet food (if you are feeding dry food food, give your dog can food)
- Water: Ensure you dog has water available.  If he does not like to drink, mix in some chicken broth to encourage him to drink it.
- Take your dog for a long long walk so s/he has plenty of opportunity to relieve her/himself.
- If still no stool, visit your vet.

In light of the recent VW commercial on how a overweight dog lose weight, I would like to talk about what we should do when our dog is overweight


剛剛睇過 VW commercial 啲你都知肥狗的問題.  以下我例出一些基本減肥事行:

1. Check with the vet to ensure the weight has not caused any diseases or was caused by any diseases
1. 跟你獸醫 check 吓, 睇吓過肥有冇影响期他工能或 過肥是因期他病

2. Weight your dog to get the earmark
2. 磅重, 可以知道由幾重開始

3.  Exercise your pet: Brisk walk not slow stroll, swimming, and hiking, etc
3.  運動!  不是慢慢行.  也可以遊水或行山

4. Diet - give better food that is lower in fat
4. 食 - 低脂肪食物

5. Cut or reduce unhealthy snack.  Feed Carrot as an alternative.
5. 不餵或 餵小Ｄ不良的雜食.  可餵小蘿蔔

6.  Play game with your dog to get him / her moving
