Common Causes of Weight Loss in Off The Track Race Horses

Common Causes of Weight Loss in Off The Track Race Horses

An excertp from the book, Beyond The Track (see our other blog).  The article talks about the  common causes of weight loss in off-the-track Thoroughbreds (OTTBs).

Common reasons for weight loss poinnted out by the books are-:

- Insufficient calories from feed
- Parasite infestation
- Heat will cause a horse to burn more calories
- Cold will also cause a horse burn extra calories
- Fighting insects: Thoroughbreds hate insects. They tend to be thin-skinned and especially sensitive to biting flies and mosquitoes, so expect the weight to "melt" off your horse if he spends too much time fighting the bugs--inside as well as out.
- Pacing the fence
- Sickness
- Teeth

HHC DVDs and Books - A Horseman's Notes by Erik Herbermann

HHC DVDs and Books - A Horseman's Notes by Erik Herbermann

"Erik Herbermann is a staunch advocate of classical ideas, and his ideology is based on an objective study of the horse's nature, which seeks the depth of understanding and quality of work perceived in the greatest of Renaissance Masters.
In common with these luminaries he views equitation as a self improving art, rooted in the utmost of affection and respect for the horse"

HHC finds this book being a very interesting read.  It is for those who want to understand more about classical horsemanship.  Throughout the entire book, author talks about mutual respectful relationship that we ought to have between horses and their riders/ leaders.  The book is full of romantic ideas of horsemanship; it contains beautiful quotes from various masters and beautiful illustrations that are easy to understand.  The book is very well organized with clear references and suggested further readings for those who are interested in research the subjects.  The book is very inspiring.

For those of you who want to find this book, you will need to try your local library, used book stores or eBay as the book is out of print.
