The importance of Mounting Blocks, by Leith Emrich, talks about breaking our habit on mounting from the ground.

Spine: It talks about the Horse’s spine is not well withstand the pull of a rider’s weight from the side.  When is mounted from the ground, all of the rider’s weight is placed in the left stirrup, torquing the saddle to the left and the horse’s withers.   Repeating this process can do serious damage to the horse.

Saddle: Habitually mounting from the ground can compromise the condition of your saddle including the wool in the panels, stirrup leathers and a twisted tree.
