Proper use of the ring of muscles allows a horse the opportunity to reach his full athletic potential and helps to keep a horse sound for the long-term. (The ring of muscles: Muscles that include the abdominal, scalenus, and semiteninosus from the neck to the loin area.)

When you ask your horse to back up a hill, your horse will require to use his ring of muscles. And, backing up the hill might be one of the most useful strengthening and suppling exercise to create the foundation for conditioning.
