What is Collapsing Tracheas?   什麼是氣管倒塌?

Collapsing trachea is a common syndrome in certain breeds of dogs and senior small dogs.  In the syndrome, the structures that support the trachea is weaken.  This causes the trachea to narrow during the course of respiration, leading to irritation and lead to coughing.  Collapsing trachea is a chronic, progressive, and non-curable syndrome.

Signs / 徵狀

You would hear your dog makes a honking noise or sounds like he is coughing up a hairball.    Inability to exercise or withstand hot condition

What breeds are affected? 一般受影響的狗

Toy and miniature dog breeds are genetically more prone to have Collapsing Tracheas.  These breeds are: Chihuahua Maltese Italian Greyhounds Pomeranian Toy Poodles Yorkshire Terrier

Prevention and Treatments? 預防和怎麼辦？

Feed high quality diet  Take Supplements that are cartilage builders to help maintain the integrity of the tracheal cartilage.  These supplements can include DHA, glucosamine, chondroitin, and eggshell membrane.  (refer to Steadfast) Chiropractic and acupuncture have demonstrated to reduce the intensity and the duration of coughing episodes.  To avoid Inflammation, adding antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids to the diet is a safe and natural way to reduce inflammation (refer to CoatPlus) Stress, anxiety, and fear are the worst enemies of a dog with a collapsing trachea as these emotions can trigger the problem; use Flower essences to reduce acute anxiety.
